Australian Rufous Fantail

The Australian Rufous Fantail is a small, lively bird that is notoriously difficult to photograph well due to its energetic nature. Found in wetter forests, these relentless movers are quite a spectacular sight to see.

They are migratory, travelling from Northern Australia to southern places such as the Mornington Peninsula for the summer. You can see them between October and April at the right locations.

Be careful not to confuse them with the resident Grey Fantails, which lack the rufous tail colouring and rufous ‘monobrow’ of the Rufous Fantail.
