Shy Albatross

The Shy Albatross is a large pelagic seabird that breeds on small rocky islands off the coast of Tasmania. Shy Albatrosses are known for their impressive wingspan and spend the majority of their lives at sea. The species is listed as endangered under the federal EPBC act, with the biggest threat to the species being caught as bycatch in commercial fishery operations.

You can see Shy Albatross from the surf beaches facing Bass Strait, although they’ll be gliding above the waves some distance out. This species very rarely enters Port Phillip or Western Port. They’re more regularly observed during winter.
